The first settlement on the territory of modern Kyiv was founded a half - two thousand years ago. In the interim years, the story says that in the fifth century (the official date of founding of the city 482 years) on the steep right bank of the Dnieper city was founded. The founders of Kiev are considered brothers Kyi, Schek and Horeb and their sister Lybyad. In honor of the elder brother of the city and named Kiev, and the other brothers, history is silent. On their sister Lybyadi and now reminds Kyiv river, which not all the townspeople heard - almost across the center of it flows chained to the concrete.

 

 

On the high banks of the Dnieper were built fortified palaces of the Kievan princes, and in the area of Podil settled merchants and artisans. After the unification of the Slavic tribes of the city became the capital of Kievan Rus. Advantageous geopolitical location of the city at the crossroads of trade routes and close to a major at the time of the waterway from the Varangians to the Greeks allowed the Kievan Rus and Kiev to maintain trade relations with many countries. In 988 Prince Vladimir baptized Kiev Rus. During the reign of Yaroslav the Wise built St. Sophia Cathedral, which still celebrates the architects of the time. Under Yaroslav Kiev reached a peak and was one of the largest cities in Europe, surpassing London. 

In 1240 the city was sacked by the hordes of Batu.

In the fifteenth century Kiev was granted the Magdeburg Law, providing greater independence of the city in trade and enhancing the rights of merchants, artisans.

After the opening of Odessa - Kursk railway in 1860 Kiev has become a major transport hub.
In 1892 Vladimir descent was Russia's first electric tram.

January 22, 1918 Kiev became the capital of independent Ukraine declared the Central Rada. September 19, 1941 in Kiev, German troops entered the city was almost completely destroyed. The city was only released on Nov. 6, 1943.

1953 - built a bridge to them. Paton - the first in the world built with the use of electric welding.

In 1960 was put into operation the first stage of the Kiev Metro consisted of five stations. Trains go from the station Voksalna to the station "Dnepr".

August 24, 1991 after the independence of Kiev became the capital of Ukraine.

Now Kiev is one of the largest European cities. Area about 827 square kilometers, the population of 2,6 million people. The city is divided into ten areas: 7 on the right bank - Shevchenko
